Portfolio Company Receives Funding From NSF & DOD To Develop High Energy Supercapacitors

Y-Carbon, Inc. announced today the award of research funding from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense (Navy). This funding, which comes from the Federal SBIR grant program, will support Y-Carbon's nanotechnology research which seeks to develop advanced supercapacitors.

Successful Partnership Between the Center and Crystalplex

For Crystalplex CEO Matt Bootman, the Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center was just the catalyst that his start-up nanotech company needed to bring its intellectual property to light. Bootman’s company develops and manufactures semiconductor nanocrystals, commonly referred to as quantum dots (QDs). Crystalplex’s QDs provide high-performance, solid-state light emission for color display, general lighting and organic light-emitting diode applications. They also have application in photovoltaics.

Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center Announces a New Program Focused on Energy

The Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center has just been awarded funding from the Department of Community and Economic Development for a new initiative in Energy. This program will begin in May 2009 and run until December 2010. It will follow a similar approach to the Center’s existing commercialization activities but will focus on using advanced materials for dual use applications in energy, both renewable and non-renewable.

Partnership Success Story with Integran

Integran Inc. developed the first large scale structural applications for nano-structured materials in the award-winning Electrosleeve process for nuclear steam generator repair and has been granted one of the earliest issued US patents in teh field of nanotechnology. Since that time, Integran has established an international reputation for excellence in materials technology development and commercialization.

The Center Completes Another Successful "Find A Research Partner" For A Local Company

At the pre-project and proposal stage, the Center proactively creates opportunities for matching advanced nanomaterials technologies with product applications. The Center plays a matchmaking role to bring together the right university researcher and commercial partners. For example, a company may be seeking a research partner to solve a difficult technical challenge which is hindering a new product from reaching the market. Conversely, a university researcher may wish to market his or her technology capability to companies.

Local Nano Companies Mentioned in the Central Penn Business Journal

Illuminex knows about adding jobs slowly. The company started with Habib and another partner doing experiments out of a college closet. Today, the company has nine people working on nano-engineered products, such as heat pipes that could remove heat from computers and solar-panel technology in fabric form.
